About Us

Our Name

Sheep
Acting like the animals that blindly follow the rest of the flock.

Black Sheep
Not fitting in with the rest

Ram
A sheep with horns.

RAM
Random access memory computer chip.

Your ticket to having fun on your bike while riding faster and further than you have before, by using the coaching techniques that work; not making the same mistakes as everyone else.

We don’t follow the flock. It’s good to be the black sheep.
Everyone needs to get their own understanding, and do things their own way.
We’ll break down the skills and techniques and build them up so you know what works for you.
A solid technical understanding, means you get explanations in consistent, simple language: direct to what helps.

Ram is a male sheep, but also a play on computer RAM. We are technical. Physics are a big part of what keeps us on the bike. Getting deep into the technical aspects of all of the forces and motion at play while riding dramatically improves your ability to learn quickly and continue to improve.

Rohan also runs Black Ram Labs, a digital sports technology development consultancy helping companies around the world build gadgets that impact your riding. The same approach applies to both businesses.

INSTRUCTOR & COACH. PROFESSIONAL MOUNTAIN BIKE INSTRUCTOR CERTIFIED IN 2011. SPORTS TECHNOLOGY CONSULTANT.

Hi, I’m Rohan.

The guy that loves teaching and riding bikes. After growing up in Perth, I’ve had the pleasure of basing myself for a number of years in the Canadian Rockies, the French Alps, and other destinations with amazing places to ride (bikes and snowboards). I’ve been able to do this as I worked remotely creating digital gadgets with companies like Garmin, Wahoo, SRAM, Mavic and Specialized, and training platforms like Strava, Today’s Plan. I’ve had the opportunity to ride with DH champions, pro road cyclists, epic mountain bike racers, bike designers and MTB YouTube sensations…and a whole lot of people who know the joys of getting out on a bike.

As a teenager I would build dirtjumps for my BMX, but it wasn’t until I was 26 and took a job with Garmin in Western Canada that I first tried mountain biking. And in real mountains. It was a big learning curve. I remember what it was like trying to learn the skills for mountain biking, and this is a huge help while instructing. In 2011 I trained for and achieved my first PMBI instructors certification, at Kicking Horse Resort in BC, Canada, under the direction of Paul Howard himself: the creator of the Professional Mountain Bike Instructor Association. Since then I’ve been honing my instructor skills helping improve the skills of riders of all abilities, and myself.

Covid was my reason to leave the mountains and return to Perth. Where I’m happily integrating into the amazing mountain bike community we have here, and enjoying the competition of WAGE and DH races (and grabbing some medals). Say hi if you see me.

Let’s ride!

Hannah

Book Private: 2 Hours 3 Hours

INSTRUCTOR & COACH. TEACHES MULTIPLE CHALLENGING SPORTS. DISPENSER OF CONTAGIOUS ENERGY.

Having fallen in love with the mountain sports (and Hills) of the UK, Canada, Australia and many other places, Hannah has spent the last 6+ years of her life passing on the stoke and knowledge to the communities around her in all the sports she loves; Rock climbing, Ski touring and MTB biking.

She spent several years in the UK and Perth instructing rock climbing and it was with this love for rocks she moved out to Canada. While out in the rocky mountains of Alberta she realised going up was only half the fun. She fell in love with the thrill and adventure of down hill MTB riding.

Living in the playground of Alberta and British Columbia she set out to explore downhill parks and even venture into enduro riding. She loves the tech and challenges nature throws our way when riding natural trails, but can’t help herself to tackle a good flow trail every now and again!

Moving back to Perth she was inspired to take her instructing into a new sport and join Black Ram MTB to help encourage and support more people to feel confident on bikes. You may bump into Hannah riding the trails, navigating the surf or climbing some of the rock faces around Perth, feel free to always say hi and share the stoke!

Elijah

Book Private: 1 Hour 2 Hours

INSTRUCTOR. PERTH HILLS LOCAL. LIMITLESS YOUTHFUL ENERGY, YET ALWAYS RELAXED.

“That red guy”. If you’ve spent much time around the jumps at the Goat Farm you probably know Elijah already. Riding almost every day, he’s an MTB addict who progressed super fast as soon as he discovered the sport. Keen to learn everything he could about this passion, he quickly jumped into racing; winning the 19-29 year olds category in his first season and getting himself over east to race at Highline festival and in the open category at the Derby Enduro World Cup round to start the 2023 season.

After sharing his knowledge at the first WAGE Rider Development weekend he was keen to teach more, receiving his PMBIA MTB coaching accreditation and joining the Black Ram MTB Skills & Coaching team.

Sam

Book Private: 2 Hours 3 Hours

INSTRUCTOR. WHISTLER RESIDENT STUCK BACK IN PERTH. BIKES & BIKE PARTS EXPERT.

Sam has been sharing the stoke of mountain biking as much as possible since returning to Perth. With a background in customer service and the fact that he is always smiling, he knows how to keep you happy. In a temporary break from managing bars, he moved to Whistler…and then discovered mountain biking. After becoming a Canadian Resident and getting bored with the trails they had over there, he decided it was time to step-up his game and get back to riding Perth trails (ok…Covid happened while he was visiting home).

You may have seen him around. In the bike shop. Leading KMBC social ride groups. Volunteering at Come and Try days. Or just offering advice at the trail head. He is a newly PMBIA certified MTB instructor, and brings a wealth of knowledge thanks to riding every day on world-class trails with many world-class riders. Beginner and Intermediate riders particularly value his insights due to having learnt jumping and riding offroad as an adult – he can relate!

Make the most of having him in Perth while you can.
